Online Gambling Forum Power Shifts From CAP to GPW
February 13 2009, 1:14 AM
As banned members of the online casino industry are joined by those voluntarily leaving, CAP posts and visits are dropping while the Gambling Portal Webmaster Association forums have become the industry's gathering spot.
The abrupt changes in status by CAP leader Lou Fabiano reflect the panicky attitude of the organization. First, after fighting over whether the conflicts exist, Fabiano changes the subject when proof is offered and says he is resigning for health reasons. Then it is announced he is on vacation leave. Finally, within a space of days, Fabiano returns, blasting his self-appointed stand-in as he reclaims his spot.
Meanwhile, even as CAP insists only Michael and Steven Corfman were banned from their forums, a punishment that was lifted, dozens of posts appear on GPWA asserting that the posters are banned for offenses as light as asking what the mess is about.
Running an organization designed to smooth out uneven business practices and arbitrate unfair situations doesn't lend itself to a paranoid shunning of any raising legitimate questions. And a stonewalling refusal to confront evidence and air out problems destroys trust.
Traffic numbers reported on the GPWA forums indicate that CAP business has been greatly affected by the scandals. Members of the Internet gambling industry have shown that they will fill the void of federal regulators by exposing shady operations and then ignoring the offending sites, letting them drift to ghost town significance.
As the online gaming community turns its attention to GPWA, APCW, the Corfmans, and J. Todd, let all hope they remember the lesson of CAP, and refuse to let a few dollars tempt them away from integrity.

Online Casino Operator PartyGaming Sues Empire Onl
January 7 2009, 4:22 AM
PartyGaming PLC, the company behind such Internet casino gambling sites as PartyPoker, has filed suit in London against Livermore Investments Groups, formerly known as Empire Online, according to an article in the Bloomberg News. In 2006, PartyGaming bought Empire Online's Internet gaming business for $38 million.
Empire then changed its name to Livermore, and began operating as strictly an investment firm. But PartyGaming spokesmen allege that Livermore did not deliver the full sum of income due in the deal, and the gambling operator wants to recover a six-figure amount it says is owed it.
PartyGaming has been in the news recently for the settlement paid by co-founder Anurag Dikshit to the US Department of Justice. Dikshit pled guilty to violating US laws against online casino gambling and paid a fine of $300 million, even though the validity of charges is highly dubious.
While the company is also in negotiations with the US government to square away any difficulties regarding retroactive prosecutions by US law enforcement, a spokesman for PartyGaming said any sum to be paid would be significantly less than Dikshit's payment.
PartyGaming is listed on the London Stock Exchange, and news of impending deals freeing the company from further US persecution have led to upswings in the stock's value. Many feel that settling US charges would allow the online casino operator to re-enter the US market if US laws were to change, a distinct possibility with a new Congress and President.

Clock Ticking For Online Casino Gambling Opponents
December 24 2008, 8:00 AM
The anti-gambling politicians have had their way over the past several years when it comes to online casinos and Internet gambling. Their run is quickly approaching an end, however, and the online industry cannot wait.
Representative Barney Frank has done just about everything in his power to try and have the online gaming industry regulated in the United States. He has been an avid opponent of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, but his cries have fell on deaf ears.
That may all be changing within the next few months. As the end of 2008 nears, people from all walks of life are overjoyed with the idea of a change in leadership in the US. None, however, will be more relieved that the Internet casino gambling community.
The current administration, amidst all of their underhanded, have managed to outlaw Internet gambling as part of a secure borders Bill back in 2006. For two years, they fumbled around with trying to define the new Internet gambling laws, but were unsuccessful.
Recently, lawmakers did try to put one final nail in the coffin of online grand casino, by publishing the rules for the UIGEA. While effective for now, all the rules really did was make it a tad harder for lawmakers coming in that want to regulate Internet gambling.
With the economic crisis looming, incoming lawmakers will have more on their plate to immediately deal with than Internet gambling. Once that work is complete, however, the task will switch to once again feeling the Internet, something online casino gaming operators from all countries will welcome with open arms.

Walker Admits Worries over Ebdon-Liang
October 13 2008, 7:12 AM
The sponsors reportedly did so in reaction to betting abnormalities in a last month’s Northern Ireland Trophy match between Peter Ebdon and Wenbo Liang. According to several bookmakers, a number of punters favored an upset for Ebdon despite unfavorable odds. When Ebdon did suffer a second-round defeat at a spread of 5-0, the books became suspicious.
One anecdote relates how a man walked into the London offices of independent Roar branch Edgeware asking for a £2,000 line at even on Liang and a £500 line at 20:1. Edgeware refused to take the man’s bet and, instead, offered him a £50 wager at 14:1 in a double with a horse that lost odds-on.
Another firm related losing “a substantial five-figure sum” and noted that they refused one bettor a bet that would have netted him £25,000. Still another reported punters backing Liang for as much as 28:1. Because of such incidents in casino, the bookmakers notified the WPBSA and stopped taking bets outright.
”We took plenty on the match result before we suspended betting quite early in the morning,” Tom Pickering, spokesman for Totesport, told Eurosport.com. “We didn’t take one bet on Ebdon. Everyone wanted to back Liang, however much we shortened the price.”
After the match, Ebdon told an interviewer, “(Liang) played extremely well. I practice with him a lot. He’s a great talent. (Betting) is not something that interests me.”
Meanwhile, Liang’s manager, Garry Baldrey, said his client was unaware of any betting patterns surrounding the match and had not been approached by anyone wishing to fix the results.
The national Gambling Commission, which is responsible for regulating gambling in the U.K. and has the power to prosecute anyone suspected of fraud, has launched an investigation into the incident of online casinos.
Although the WPBSA has already banned two players, Peter Fransico and Quintin Hann, a spokes- person for the association said it has no intention of investigating the Ebdon-Liang match. the statement has led some commentators to note that Ebdon collects £15,000 per year as a board member of the WPBSA’s ruling body.
The WPBSA, however, maintains that is merely allowing the Gambling Commission’s investigation to take its course.
“Having considered the matter and followed the proper procedures, including consultation with the ABB (Association of British Bookmakers) and the Gambling Commission, we are satisfied that the action taken is appropriate,” one WPBSA spokesperson said.
Still, the incident seems to have hurt WPBSA in the worst possible way: the pocketbook.
“If there’s any information available that is interesting from another sport, I’d be happy to have a look, particularly as we are looking for two new online casino sponsors,” Walker said. “In this very difficult marketplace, no one would get involved if they considered a product damaged in any way.”
